Leeds Combination League Division 1

27 January 2008

Leeds City Rovers 3 – 0 Armley New Inn

Leeds City Rovers continued their impressive recent form on Sunday with their third victory in a row defeating Armley New Inn at the War Memorial Ground. Despite being out of action for seven weeks thanks to numerous postponements, Rovers brushed aside the South Leeds side netting their 16th, 17th, and 18th goals since they last conceded against Chapeltown Brazil four games ago.  The gaffer had another strong squad with new signing Chris Pugh joining the bench alongside the teams other recent additions Tom Maxwell and Alastair Jackson. Former player Jonny Richies was also on the sidelines after an announcement before the game that he is set to return to the club.

In a strong wind the game kicked off and both sides found the first 15 minutes difficult as both sides took time to adjust after the long absence. The first real opportunity fell to the visitors when Armley striker Andy Bell’s clever pass released his teammate to his left who shot wide. Rovers responded with a couple of close attempts. Geoff Clarkson forced a good save from the Armley goalkeeper with a stinging drive from 25 yards and Howard Collier headed just wide after a weighted cross from Paul Marriott. The game however sprung to life mid way through the second half as Rovers opened the scoring. Geoff Clarkson delivered an excellent cross from the right and Paul Wills shot was well saved by the Armley keeper only for Joe Magnal to pounce on the rebound and finish calmly into the top right corner from a tight angle. With the wind in Rovers favour the home side pushed on for a second however despite half chances for Paul Marriott who reacted to a ricochet in the box and shot over and Paul Wills who had a shot cleared after a strong run into the box, Armley defended well and went into half time relatively happy with the score.

Armley came out for the second half wanting to create some early pressure on the Rovers goal however it was the home side that came out the blocks the fastest. Howard Collier had a shot cleared off the line after a good move causing a manic goal mouth scramble which Armley barely survived and Collier again came close just failing to make enough contact on a cross after good work from Lev Watach on the left. Armley didn’t survive for much longer and Paul Wills double his teams’ advantage meeting Howards cross from the right with an outstretched boot to finish excellently over the on rushing goalkeeper. At 2-0 Rovers were in full control and started to play some excellent football and it wasn’t long before the lead was stretched even further as Paul Wills added his second of the game, his 28th of the season, after finishing well following good work from Nick Wilson in midfield. Rovers had Armley on the ropes and brought on Tom Maxwell for the tiring Paul Marriott. Rovers were threatening to run away with the game however a forth goal wouldn’t come. Howard again went close but skewed a left foot drive wide and Nick Wilson went close with a long range effort. Alastair Jackson and new signing Chris Pugh soon followed Tom off the bench in replace of Lev who picked up a dead leg and Geoff Clarkson and Rovers saw the game out in cruise control.

Rovers will be pleased with their display and will certainly be looking to continue their run away at South Leeds United next week.
